One of the most frequent and tricky decisions for Christian organisations is how you respond to an employee’s ill-health, for example:

  • The work needs to be done, but you don’t want to pester the unwell or act in an uncaring manner. What about the morale of those impacted by a colleague’s pattern of absence? Perhaps you are not sure if the absence is genuine, but don’t want to make false accusations. At what point should someone’s health or absence put their job at risk?
  • What should you pay? You will want to be a good steward of your resources, but you won’t want the unwell to be financially suffering. Maybe you may want to know what standards others apply.
  • Some ill health may amount to a “disability” creating additional obligations. What are these? What should you do if the ill health is caused by work? Do you have to avoid stress for staff at all costs? Should you let ill staff know you are praying for their healing?
